Welcome! We’re here to talk dogs, memes, dog memes, and staying sane (ish) in a noisy world!
Laurie—a longtime digital writer, editor, photographer and online community manager—and Hoover—a puggle with semi-serious Instagram clout and many many feelings—are your hosts. We’ve been social media co-pilots for several years now, and it’s time to kick it up a notch to the newsletters the human writes all the time, for other people.
(Seriously, check out
! I edit that site these days.)It’s Oh My Dog, because sometimes, just sometimes, it’s in my dog’s face that I most clearly see the face of god. (I’m gonna break that down just a bit, so stick around.)
Did you know that as of September, 2021, the ASPCA estimated that 23 million households had adopted dogs during the pandemic? Over 70 percent of us own are owned by pets, and we spend a ton of money on these rulers of our households.
It’s big money, and big emotional business. I got Hoover in 2014, a year after I got sober, and he has been my dude ever since. I’m a “my dog is family person", but for practical as much as schmoopy reasons. He kept me the best kind of company during lockdown, he gets me out of the house on twice-daily walks (Beagle nose, pug nosiness means he simply must be on the move.) He makes people happy everywhere we go. He is a cranky, lovable, perpetually hungry and exhausted sentient baked potato who makes me simply, non-verbally calm like no other creature. (Yes, pets are good for your blood pressure.)
And I see that joy in other pet people too.
So I want to talk about it. We’ll be hovering around the intersections of pets, people, mental health, recovery, and pop culture, because those are my jams. And in case you’re concerned, and can handle the canine focus, cat—and hamster, llama, bird, goat, you name it—people are more than welcome, too.
We’ll be here regularly, so bookmark us, recommend us, send us your questions and comments—and also dog/animal/pet memes. We love those the most.
I’m here for this!
