Hey there! I’m Laine, and I started Oh My Dog because dogs, while perhaps not God, are what I like to call a “lowercase g” god — part always hungry manager, part therapist, part (literal) reason to get out of bed in the morning, and definitely way better than people.

I’ve always written a lot about the challenges of being human, and during the pandemic, I started thinking — also a lot — about the intersection between pet people and mental health. Do we rescue our dogs, or vice versa? I feed mine, sure. But he listens, like it or not. He also absorbs tears, and moods, stupid repetitive songs and the awful times I’m home to let him out way later than I intended. And he forgives me.

This newsletter intends to reflect that intersection of dogs and mental health, pets and general wellbeing, love and dog hair and grief and loss. I like real stories, like the one about a scrappy 12 pound terrier who eventually made it back home to his family across 1000 miles of prairie. I like dog facts and animal behavior information and a little bit of training, but not a lot, because my dog is disobedient and it’s all my fault. I’m also an idiot who needs more than the average amount of stress release, so animal memes and GIFs are my daily currency. Fair warning.

I’m a professional writer and editor who works in digital comms for a good cause, with a background in counseling and writing and career coaching. I’m also a recently certified yoga teacher, mindfulness guide and people/animal reiki healing practitioner — all of the woo-woo that brings me joy, inspired by my 12-year-old puggle Hoover, who is the highest power I can handle.
